CBD Explained: What it is and how it can be used for health

CBD has become a hot topic in recent months, with more research and products being introduced to the market. But many of you may be wondering what exactly is CBD? Is it safe to consume? Is it the same thing as cannabis? Which is why I am giving you all the information you need to know about this amazing compound.

CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is one of the many chemical compounds (also called cannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant. THC, the more well known sister compound, has a similar makeup to CBD, but is responsible for more of the psychoactive effects of cannabis. CBD differs from THC in that it has different actions at cannabinoid receptors in the body and does not cause the psychoactive side effects.

More recently, researchers have discovered that our bodies naturally contain something called the Endocannabinoid system - a set of receptors within our brains, nervous system, and other critical parts of our body that directly interact with cannabinoids. These receptors and the compounds that bind to them have different effects on the body and have been shown to have profound health benefits.

CBD, in particular, works by acting on the CB1 and CB2 receptors in our bodies. CB1 receptors are mainly located in the brain and nervous system, while CB2 receptors are mostly located on immune cells. By binding to CB1 receptors, CBD helps modulate neurotransmitter production, which can affect the central and peripheral nervous system. When CBD binds to CB2 receptors, it can help modulate inflammatory responses within the body.

Clinical studies have found CBD to be beneficial for numerous conditions such as anxiety/depression, autoimmune disease, chronic pain, gut conditions, and neurological diseases. CBD is non toxic, does not cause euphoria and is extremely safe even at high dosages.

It is important to make sure the CBD you are using is from a reputable source. Looking for a product that has been harvested with minimal pesticide exposure, uses safe extraction methods and is full spectrum. Here at VWS, we offer high quality CBD products from Frogsong Farms, a local company based in Oregon. As with any supplement, it is a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider to make sure it is the right fit for you.
