The Importance of Magnesium

Magnesium is an essential mineral that is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions that occur within our bodies. These reactions help with energy production, liver detoxification, and neurotransmitter production. Magnesium plays an important role in maintaining bone integrity, blood sugar control, and regulating immunity. Large amounts of magnesium can also act as a muscle relaxant. More recently, studies have shown that up to 75 percent of Americans do not consume the recommended daily intake of magnesium.

Certain groups of individuals may be at increased risk of developing magnesium deficiency. These include women with osteoporosis, diabetics, individuals with anxiety and depression, diets high in processed foods, vitamin D deficiency, certain prescription medications, digestive disorders, and the elderly population.

I recommend that people regularly include magnesium into their regimen for better overall health. Foods that contain higher amounts of magnesium are nuts/seeds, dark leafy greens, beans, avocados, and beets. There are also different forms of magnesium supplements that have various effects on the body. For example, magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide provide a laxative effect, while magnesium chelate and glycinate are more easily absorbed in the intestinal tract.

Magnesium has many uses such as easing constipation, relieving muscle spasms, decreasing anxiety, and helping improve sleep. We really do not give enough credit to this amazing mineral! At VWS we have multiple forms of magnesium to meet different needs! It is always a good idea to consult with a physician before adding new supplements to review dosages and to rule out medication interactions.
